Sims 2 Homeless Challenge: Children in Winter (Playtest 1)
As you may already know, I am playing Callista's Homeless Challenge as a sub-challenge within my Build a City Challenge, and will have to play their (as of yet unborn) child in the Winter with no shelter. But, since I won't be able to play them again for a while, and I was pretty anxious to see if I could manage it, I'm playtesting a couple of scenarios in a different hood to find the best way to success.
I've linked to the actual challenge rules at the bottom of this post, but in short, to break the cycle of homelessness, a descendant of your Homeless Sim must go to University, and in order to do that, they must have 10 scholarships.
First, I made a couple + toddler in CAS and placed them on a "homeless" lot in the Fall to see if they could avoid the Social Worker without shelter. Answer: Yes, I had no problems with temperature and got no warnings, but your own mileage may vary. (Sorry, didn't take pictures, but I did opt to have the toddler skill Charisma rather than go for any toddler skills.)
EDIT: Sorry about that! Put the rest under the cut...
Toddler grew into a child just before the season turned to Winter, and this is where things stood:

Favorite find in a long time is this peeable shrub found at Affinity Sims here: http://www.affinitysims.com/IPB/index.php?/files/file/1835-animated-shrub-butiacapitatatoilet/ (thanks for the link, Esme!). It shows up in the toilet category, so if I count is as one of the limited buy-mode objects I can place on the lot each day, I don't consider it cheaty.

Also popular with the kids from school. (Ain't it the truth?)

It's getting cold, even it it doesn't look like it yet...

Quick harvest before everything freezes. Original plan was to make tomato juice for warmth, but a counter and the juicer weren't at the top of my priority list for necessary buy-mode objects I could place on the lot.

Despite his living conditions, the kid is excelling in school.

Winter finally hits in earnest, and the Shoddy Fireplace is a lifesaver. One "warm self" will get Sims out of low blue, and several in a row will get them into green.

Now, this is what I started with, which is actually one too many buy-mode objects, but I have both the tent and bed out to see if one does a better job at keeping them warm.

And the surprise winner was the snow-covered bed, which kept their temperature levels steady for a good 6 hours.
More ways to warm up/keep warm:

The hikes Mom took weren't really worth it, not with her perpetual entourage of skunks and bees...

Homeless life pretty much sucks for Mom...

and is not for the faint-hearted.

Though it's not without its lighter moments, thanks to you guessed it.

Oh, the stories this kid will tell!

Made it!

He now stands at 8 Body, 4 (almost 5) Charisma, and 2 Creativity.

And post-makeover is where I will leave you.
Thanks to
joandsarah for playing and posting her Homeless Challenge as well!
And of course, thanks to Callista for creating this challenge and her custom Homeless career, both of which can be found here: http://boolprop.prophpbb.com/topic1878.html
My next test will be: Infants Without Shelter (Haha, Winter is over, babay!) Until then, Happy Simming!
